The PRO-4000 uses all 12 PFI-1100, PFI-1300 and PFI-1700 colours, the same as the PRO-2000, PRO-6000, PRO-2100, PRO-4100 and PRO-6100. The 8-ink PRO-4000S, PRO-6000S, PRO-4100S and PRO-6100S use the same tanks but only 8 colours, so check for the S. The PFI-3100, PFI-3300 and PFI-3700 LUCIA PRO II inks for the PRO-4600 do not fit the PRO-4000.
What Each PRO-4000 Ink Colour Does
- Photo Black and Matte Black: Photo Black for glossy, semi-gloss and lustre photo papers; Matte Black for deeper blacks on matte, fine art and canvas. The printer picks the right black for the paper, so keep both installed.
- Cyan, Magenta and Yellow: the core colours used in almost every print.
- Photo Cyan, Photo Magenta and Photo Grey: lighter inks for smooth highlights, skin tones and neutral black and white prints.
- Grey: cleaner neutral tones and smoother gradations in mono and colour work.
- Red and Blue: extend the colour gamut for richer reds, purples and deep blues.
- Chroma Optimiser: a clear ink that evens out gloss and deepens blacks on photo papers.
Which Ink Size: 160ml, 330ml or 700ml?
- 700ml (PFI-1700): fewest tank changes and usually the lowest cost per millilitre, the popular choice for a 44" printer in a busy studio or print room.
- 330ml (PFI-1300): a balance of capacity and cost for regular photo, poster and fine art printing.
- 160ml (PFI-1100): the lowest outlay, for lower volumes or colours you use less often.

Yes. The PRO-4000 accepts 160ml, 330ml and 700ml tanks of the same Canon ink, so you can buy a larger size of the colours you use most, such as Photo Black or Matte Black.
Do the PRO-4000 and PRO-4000S use the same ink?
They use the same PFI-1100, PFI-1300 and PFI-1700 tanks, but the PRO-4000 uses all 12 colours and the PRO-4000S uses only 8. The PRO-4000S does not use Photo Grey, Red, Blue or Chroma Optimiser.

No. The PRO-2600, PRO-4600 and PRO-6600 use PFI-3100, PFI-3300 and PFI-3700 LUCIA PRO II ink, which does not fit the PRO-4000.

Chroma Optimiser is a clear ink that evens out gloss and deepens blacks on glossy, semi-gloss and lustre photo papers. It is one of the 12 PRO-4000 inks and needs to be installed.
